Although, there only several in any sort of widespread usage. There are many different kinds out there. ![]() We’ve covered the term “codec” in general terms, and now it’s time to explore the actual types of codecs that exist. The good news is that, despite streaming relying on lossy compression, the visual quality remains quite high. With regards to streaming, most services will employ lossy compression to maximize file shrinkage. It’s largely the same with video codecs and how they encode (compress) raw data into a more manageable format. WAV files retain data and generally sound better at the cost of additional size. MP3s are lossy formats with slightly degraded quality in exchange for very small file size. It may help to consider recognizable audio formats such as WAV files and MP3s to understand the difference between lossless and lossy data encoding. Lossless compression preserves all of the data present in the file, while lossy compression discards excess information that the algorithm deems unimportant. Video encoding falls into two broad categories: lossless compression and lossy compression. At the core of a codec are complex algorithms that make the process possible, with the viewer none the wiser to what’s going on behind the scenes. Subsequently, it is also responsible for decompressing it on the consumer end for streaming and playback. ![]() Video codecs are responsible for compressing raw data for storage and transmission. Video codecs squash, or compress, raw digital data into compact chunks for transmission and delivery of on-demand media. ![]() Not only is storage an issue, but transmitting uncompressed video data would demand huge amounts of network bandwidth as well. Part of what makes a video codec so important is the necessity to shrink file sizes to more manageable loads. You can imagine the challenges storage alone would pose for a service like Netflix. Uncompressed video files require a tremendous amount of storage space, to the tune of nearly two terabytes for a 120-minute movie. In short, codec’s meaning is “coder-decoder.” Why are Codecs Important? The word “codec” itself blends the words “encoder” and “decoder.” An encoder is responsible for compressing data and a decoder is responsible for decompressing it. A video codec is a software algorithm that compresses and decompresses digital video for distribution. If you’re wondering what a codec is, we’ll aim to clarify that now. One of these is understanding video codecs and how they’re related to digital video in the streaming age. However, for videographers, editors, broadcasters, content creators, and other professionals, there are some important considerations. Most consumers typically wouldn’t delve into the technical complexities that drive the video streaming industry. This is an astounding number that confirms the platform’s ever-increasing popularity. As a whole, the industry is projected to be worth over $300 billion by the year 2030. population subscribes to at least one video streaming platform. According to Sandra Pattison of Cloudwards, approximately 85% of the U.S. On-demand streaming services have transformed how we consume media in staggering ways. ![]() ![]() TLDR: The DaVinci Resolve docs seem to give all the same info as the Fusion Studio 16 standalone docs, albeit with some duplication, and you should definitely read the few pages specific to the Resolve integration, eg regarding the Image Processing Pipeline. This makes a slight difference when browsing the PDF's Table of Contents, though it's not a big deal by any means. The Resolve documentation seems to have the same chapters, but divides it between only two sections, "Fusion" and "Fusion Effects". The standalone Fusion Studio manual also feels slightly better organised, because it arranges the chapters into multiple parts, ie in the Fusion Studio 16 manual: "Getting Started", "The Fusion UI", "Importing and Rendering", "2D Compositing", "Animation", "3D Compositing" and then "Fusion Effects". I suppose the logic for this might be that in such a large manual, it helps to have all the info pertinent to a given node in one place, rather than having to keep searching back and forward, which will no doubt be slowed by having the search results polluted with non-Fusion content from other sections. There may well be other similar duplication as well. This discrepancy in Resolve's documentation length is partially explained by the fact that the Resolve manual duplicates the "Common Controls" section of documentation for every single set of node types, where the standalone Fusion docs have it appear only once. Interestingly, the Fusion Effects part of the Fusion Studio 16 manual is only 658 pages, compared to the Fusion 9 Tool Reference Guide being 791 pages, and the Fusion Page Effects section of the Resolve manual being 907 pages. There's a few extra pages dealing with Fusion's integration into the Resolve image pipeline, but certainly not 150+ of them. 163 pages longer than the Fusion Studio 16 manual, and 37 longer than the combined Fusion 9 docs. ![]() In the DaVinci Resolve Studio 16 manual, Fusion is covered from pages 944 to 2323, which is 1379 pages. ![]() Personally I do prefer the combined Fusion Studio 16 docs to the two separate docs of Fusion 9, as it allows searching both sets of content in one go, and doesn't require having two PDFs open. 20 of those pages is the documentation for Primatte, which is mysteriously left completely undocumented in Fusion Studio 16, despite still being included in the software! The Fusion Studio 16 manual is 1,216 pages, compared to 551 pages for the Fusion 9 User Guide + 791 for the Fusion 9 Tools Reference = 1,342.ġ30 pages shorter, so I suppose some info must have been streamlined or removed, but as a % it's not a vast difference. It's a shame they don't seem to have put the Fusion Studio 16 manual online. ![]() ![]() EVGA slapped an absolutely massive heatsink on this triple-slot card. “There’s indeed plenty of metal for that air to cool. And, as the dramatic presence of the pilot-figure emerged in popular culture during the opening of the Air Age, flight gear became the costume of these intrepid daredevils of the sky. Set apart from the earthbound multitudes, its wearer could not be mistaken for any other type. In addition to the practical necessity of this distinct clothing, flight gear served as the identifier of a new breed. As encumbering as these accessories were, they were much preferred over frozen faces, numb hands, and frostbitten feet. Heavy-duty gloves and gauntlets were designed with insulated linings, and special boots and over-boots insulated feet and used strap, lace, and zipper enclosures. The lenses were often tinted to reduce solar glare. Safety goggles were vital for visibility, and for protection from airfield gravel, debris, insect strikes, engine oil, and other lubricants such as castor oil that could damage the eyes. Extra layers of soundproofing were sometimes sewn over the ears and some helmets included cylindrical baffles at the front of the ear to further reduce noise levels. Most were visor-less so goggles could be easily retracted. A helmet with chinstrap and goggles worked together to protect the cranium, block engine noise, and enable the eyes to see in the high winds of the slipstream. Head-coverings and protection for the hands and feet were essential components of the pilot's flight gear. With overlapping flaps at the openings and a generous mid-waist belt for a snug fit, the one-piece flying suit was very effective at repelling the elements. Such suits featured oversized chest and leg pockets large enough to accommodate a flight chart. It provided a simplified and comfortable style of dress and left nothing to come un-tucked. The one-piece flying suit became standard issue for pilots and aviators in military service. Such full-body gear became standard on pilots' checklists, and much of it remained in use up to and during the World War II period of the 1940s. Head coverings, eyewear, facemasks, jackets, pants, one-piece coverall suits, gloves, and boots were all designed to accommodate the human side of the flying equation. ![]() Protective clothing was developed to mitigate these harsh conditions, and aviator equipment was marketed to a growing number of private, commercial, and military flyers at home and abroad. Extremes in wind velocity and temperature were primary challenges to the physical demands of operating early aircraft. As airplanes flew faster and farther, exposure to the elements became an increasingly acute part of the pilot experience. From lying prone, to sitting upright in a rudimentary seat amid open brace-work, to a position behind a partial wall, it was many years until the pilot station was fully enclosed within the fuselage of an aircraft. The invention of the airplane in 1903 was followed by a specialized line of equipment designed to meet the needs of its operator and new master of the air-the aviator. ![]() Flight Gear: Pilot Equipment from the Open-Cockpit Era ![]() ![]() ![]() Red means that the vehicle has a performance failure, and you need to open the app to check the cause of the failure and contact the after-sales service.
